El Paseo Shopping District
Visionary Cliff Henderson acquired 1,700 dry sections of land of unadulterated desert over 60 years prior miles from cultivated Palm Springs and envisioned a town focused by a rich shopping district. In 1946, he started getting it going. Fueled by a fantasy, Henderson constructed a stupendous lane he called El Paseo and punctuated it with stately palm trees about 10 years before the main store opened. "I needed a shrewd road," he said in a 1980 meeting.

At the time, Palm Desert comprised of a couple of residences and a ton of sand. Henderson developed Shadow Mountain Club, which elevated the town's profile and turned into its complex social focus, making a celebrated spot in the blooming Coachella Valley.
